چکیده

During the past several years, an AH-1 Cobra aircraft at the NASA Ames Research Center has been instrumented with tri-axial accelerometers and a data acquisition system to support the experimental study of in-flight transmission vibration patterns. This paper describes the on-board HealthWatch system and presents important statistical analyses of the collected data sets. These analyses provide insight into how transmission vibration responds to several factors typically related to health and usage monitoring systems (HUMS), such as maneuver condition, order of execution, and pilot differences. Although a large database of flight recordings has been collected, these results focus on an overall analysis of planetary ring gear data that were recorded in two sets of flights. It is shown that variability due to torque is a major factor to be considered in real-time HUMS design and that certain steady state maneuvers yield a dramatically higher percentage of stationary recordings. Finally, it is conjectured that multi-axis recording may have previously unrecognized advantages for signal conditioning or analysis.

Experimental Analysis of Steady-State Maneuvering Effects on Transmission Vibration Patterns Recorded in an AH-1 Cobra Helicopter

During the past several years, an AH-1 Cobra aircraft at the NASA Ames Research Center has been instrumented with tri-axial accelerometers and a data acquisition system to support the experimental study of inflight transmission vibration patterns. This paper describes the on-board HealthWatch system and presents some important initial statistical analyses of the collected data sets. These analy...

An Experimental Comparison of Transmission Vibration Responses from OH-58 and AH-1 Helicopters

Statistical analyses of transmission vibration patterns from an AH-1 Cobra helicopter were previously reported. Fourteen steady-state maneuvers were analyzed using multi-factor analysis of covariance. Based on triaxial recordings, it was found that only two maneuvers displayed reliably stationary time-series: low and high power forward climb. Principal Components Analysis of the triaxial RMS da...

Analysis of Aeolian Vibrations of Transmission Line Conductors and Extraction of Damper Optimal Placement with a Comprehensive Methodology

Energy balance method is an effective and simple method which is used in the amplitude calculation of Aeolian vibration in transmission lines with Stockbridge damper. However, the accuracy of the results obtained by this method, heavily depends on the assumed mode shapes of the conductor vibration. In this study, by considering an appropriate model for the conductor vibration, a comprehensive m...

An Exploration of Discontinuous Time Synchronous Averaging Using Helicopter Vibration Data

This paper explores discontinuous time synchronous averaging (DTSA) as a means for minimizing torque and related nonstationary effects on the frequency content of transmission vibration signals. Unlike conventional time synchronous averaging (TSA), DTSA averages only data for revolutions that occur in regions of a predefined state space. Using this approach, flight vibration data from the Ames ...

Aeolian Vibrations of Transmission Line Conductors with More than One Damper

To reduce the damages of aeolian vibration of conductors to the power transmission networks, the most common method is installation of Stock-bridge dampers. Estimation of the damper’s dissipated energy is an important factor in determining the number and location of installation of these types of vibration absorbers. This estimation is strongly dependent upon the assumed mode shape of the condu...
